The rail and commercial vehicle braking systems manufacturer Knorr-Bremse, generates high volumes of aluminium swarf at their Melksham site.

As a company aiming to support their customers shift towards greener transport options by rail or road, sustainability is a core value for Knorr Bremse something which of course must transfer up through their manufacturing processes.

Investing in swarf management equipment as part of a corporate sustainability plan not only contributes to achieving responsible manufacturing goals but also provides both environmental & financial benefits. This can be seen primarily with the:

  • Increased value of aluminium swarf
  • Decreased number of recycler pick ups
  • Reclamation of coolant for instant reuse

J&S Engineering work with high quality, specialist manufacturers for all of our swarf management solutions. We supplied Knorr Bremse with a stand alone iSwarf 440 swarf briquetting machine from Hocker Polytechnik & an output coolant filtration system from Siebec.

The iSwarf440 itself features a built in hopper, an internal cam barrel & crusher. The waste aluminium swarf is loaded into the hopper by fork truck and pressed to form the briquettes. The coolant reclaimed from the pressed swarf is then drained into an a separate Siebec machine where it's filtered & the tramp oil is removed so the lubricant is instantly available for reuse.

The reclamation & filtration of the machining coolant provides instant pay back by being able to be used again straight away.

The significant reduction in the volume of waste swarf needing to be stored translates into 13 skips coming down to just 1. This reduces the number of collections made by the recycler as well as the storage implications and skip costs.
